Joel Greenberg, the former tax collector of Seminole County, Florida, and former confidant of U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-1) is set to be sentenced in August 2021, after a judge accepted the guilty plea he made in mid-May 2021.

The deal came as federal investigators offered to not prosecute 33 other federal offenses, from fraud to bribery, in exchange for cooperation in the investigation. While Matt Gaetz himself was not mentioned during court proceedings regarding the guilty plea, it was evident that pursuing him could be a goal for the federal investigators.

According to the plea agreement, Joel Greenberg admitted he was a “sugar daddy” in certain relationships, including the payment to a minor, with whom he used for “commercial sex acts.” Greenberg also said in his plea he “introduced the minor to other adult men, who engaged in commercial sex acts with the minor in the Middle District of Florida.”

While the agreement did not mention Gaetz explicitly, multiple sources claim that the minor, albeit 18 at the time, in question traveled with Gaetz to the Bahamas, along with others.

For his part, Gaetz has denied the allegations, claiming it is “cancel culture at work,” along with representatives of Gaetz claiming Greenberg made a false confession.
